Diagnosis before parts
An automatic gearbox that slips, jerks or refuses to engage can have dozens of causes. Some are electronic, like a failing sensor or a solenoid that no longer responds. Some are hydraulic, like worn valve body bores or leaking piston seals. Others are mechanical: worn friction plates, damaged bearings, or a torque converter that no longer locks up.
Replacing parts on a guess is expensive. We read the transmission control unit, look at live data, check the fluid, road-test the car and, where needed, open the gearbox. Then we explain what we found and what it will take to put right.
Repair, overhaul or replacement?
Most gearbox faults fall into one of three levels of work. We recommend the smallest one that will actually fix the problem.
- Targeted repair. A single failed component, such as a solenoid, sensor, seal, connector or the valve body, is repaired or replaced.
- Overhaul. Wear is spread through the gearbox. It is stripped, cleaned, measured and rebuilt with new clutches, seals and bushes.
- Replacement. Where the casing or major hard parts are damaged beyond economic repair, we talk you through replacement options.

How do I know if my automatic gearbox has a problem?
The usual signs are slipping (revs rise without acceleration), jerky or harsh shifts, a delay when selecting D or R, a transmission warning light, fluid leaks, new noises, or the car getting stuck in one gear. Any of these is worth a diagnostic check.
Can an automatic gearbox be repaired?
Often, yes. Many faults are in replaceable components such as solenoids, seals, the valve body or individual clutch packs. Whether a repair, an overhaul or a replacement makes sense depends on what the inspection finds, and we explain the options before any work starts.
When should automatic transmission oil be changed?
It depends on the gearbox and how the car is used. Some manufacturers describe the fluid as long-life, but heat, traffic and age still degrade it. We can check the fluid condition and recommend an interval for your car.
Can you diagnose electronic transmission faults?
Yes. We read transmission control unit fault codes, adaptation values and live data, and check the sensors, wiring and power supply the gearbox depends on.
Should I continue driving if my gearbox is slipping?
It is best not to. Slipping generates heat and accelerates wear, and a problem that could be repaired can become a full rebuild. If you must drive, keep it gentle and short and book an inspection as soon as you can.
